Population of Icelandic Horses in North America

In 2000, thru our icelandichorse email discussion list, we ran a study to determine how many Icelandic Horses were in North America, specifically in the United States. Canada keeps good records of their horses, and they had approximately 1500 at the time.

Approximately 800 were registered with the United States Icelandic Horse Congress; a small percentage of the number that were actually in the US (many people do not register with the USIHC due to various reasons).

At the time, with the input from everyone on the list, and delegates from each state attempting to locate and account for all of the horses in their areas, we came up with the approximate number of 3200.
