Icelandic Horse

Ljufur is an imported Icelandic Horse and came to the United States in 1996 (at age 6 years). He was born in Iceland and raised in pasture, as far as we know. Ljufur flew from Iceland to North America in a special horse cargo box along with several other horses in a large plane. He went to Washington State for a year, and then moved to Arizona with us.

Ljufur, born in 1990, was 16 years old in 2006. You can see from the photos that he is grey and lightening every year.

He is a very kind and willing horse. His name means kind and gentle.

Ljufur is one of the larger Icelandic Horses, standing at 13.3 to 14 hands, stocky with much substance and bone. He is a pacey Icelandic. He will trot if asked, but it is hard for him to retain it, and the same situation with a canter. He can canter up a little hill about 30 feet or so, but the pacey-ness prevents him from holding it.

Ljufur is the first Icelandic Horse in the world to enter into Parelli Natural Horsemanship. He passed Level 1 in 1997.
