A snaffle bit has some type of ring on the side as the rein attachment, and a mouthpiece, which can be solid or jointed.

A curb bit has either a solid or jointed mouthpiece, attached to side pieces, the piece below the mouthpiece being called the shank, and the piece above the mouthpiece being called the purchase.
